Why We Lead With Organs

Mar 31, 2025

Nature doesn’t waste time—and neither do we.

At Earth and Tail, every product we launch has a purpose. We don’t start with what’s common or convenient—we start with what matters most. And when it comes to feeding your dog the most nutrient-dense, biologically appropriate treats possible, the answer is clear:

Organs come first.

That’s why our first four treats are made from beef liver, heart, kidney, and spleen—not your typical muscle cuts. Here’s why we chose to start here.

Predators Go for the Organs First

Out in the wild, when a predator takes down prey, the first thing it eats isn’t the steak—it’s the organs. Liver, heart, kidneys, spleen—those are top priority. This isn’t random instinct. It’s survival. These parts of the animal are where the highest concentration of nutrients live.

Organs are nature’s original superfoods, and carnivores know it. Your dog may not be hunting, but its nutritional needs haven’t changed.

Why Start With Organs Instead of Muscle Meats?

Muscle meat absolutely has value. It’s an important part of a balanced diet. But when it comes to treats—or any food given in small amounts—you want maximum impact per bite. Organs simply deliver more in terms of vitamins, minerals, and bioavailable nutrients.

That’s why we started here. Not because other cuts don’t matter—but because these organs are the foundation.

Each one brings something unique to the table:

  • Liver – High in vitamin A, iron, copper, and B vitamins.

  • Heart – Rich in taurine, CoQ10, and amino acids for heart and muscle health.

  • Kidney – Provides selenium, zinc, and B12 to support detox and immunity.

  • Spleen – A natural source of heme iron and immune-boosting compounds.

Why These Four?

These four organs represent the best of what beef has to offer nutritionally. They’re what wild dogs and wolves go for first, and they’re what we consider essential. That’s why they were the first products we brought to market. If we’re going to feed something to your dog, it’s going to be the most impactful, ethically sourced, and nutrient-rich options first.

Muscle meats may find their place in our lineup eventually—but when that happens, they’ll be chosen with intention and sourced the same way: responsibly, and with your dog’s health in mind.

Built on Purpose, Not Popularity

We launched Earth and Tail with a clear goal: give dogs the best, and respect the animal in the process. That means using more than just the obvious cuts, supporting local farms, and honoring the way animals have always been consumed—nose to tail.

Starting with organs isn’t trendy. It’s timeless.

In Summary: Why We Feed Organs First

  • They’re the most nutrient-dense parts of the animal

  • They’re instinctively eaten first by wild carnivores

  • They deliver targeted health benefits in small portions

  • They represent a nose-to-tail, ethical approach to feeding

  • They reflect our values: ancestral, intentional, and honest

We didn’t start with the flashiest option. We started with the most valuable one.
And we’ll keep building from there.
